Peabo Bryson - Good Combination - Elektra, 1986 CLASSIC quiet storm! Heavy, heavy drum programming, sweet DX7 rhodes and silky synthesizer strings. 6. The Controllers - Stay - MCA, 1986 Reggie and Ricky, Leonard and Larry over a simple drum machine with cool and minimal stabs of synths, bells and strings. Lots of air and space and a strong slap bass, too. Shout out to P.B. Boeuf for hipping me to this one! 7. Mary Jane Girls - All night long - Gordy, 1983 The most funky snare drum sound in all of boogie over a version of a legendary Keni Burke bassline. Ice cold Rick James production. 8. Kathy Buck - Don't beat around the bush - Pyramid, 1983 The verse is so, so tuff with just one chord and punchy 808 cow bell, but the chorus is soooo sweet with really smooth background vocals and synths. Overlooked track! 9. Five Star - Are you man enough? (12" vocal mix) - RCA,1986 This Shep Pettibone 12" remix adds even more massive dance floor potential to this british boogie classic. Crazy reverb, crazy handclaps, crazy sampling, crazy dope. 10. Mac Machine - TEARS - Iron Curtain, 1985 "Don't you know, that a man is not supposed to cry?!" Sensitive, heartbreak lyrics and sensitive vocoder chorus from Kassel, of all places. TEARS! Really dope laste-1980s drum programming by Walter Stein with lots of bass drum and weird toms. 11. Freddie Jackson - Nice 'n' slow (Extended version) - Capitol, 1988 This 12" mix adds more emphasis to the super, super funky doubled guitars and laser synth effects.
